Seriously, I think scientists should look into properties of the thistle for the fountain of youth or something.

Ah, landscape fabric... it leads you to think it stops weeds. But really they all just grow on top of it after all. I hear it can compact the soil below as well. Preen is our favorite weed preventative. That and ignoring them.
